Here are some things that should have been posted a while ago:

For the second half of Senior Thesis I will be creating a series of illustrations on the theme of modern relationships as documented, discussed, dissected by popular magazines and newspapers. This week I came up with three spot-illustrations for Psychology Today's relationship column. I have included my doctored version as well as the original magazine spread.

The following piece is an illustration for a short article that I contributed to the Alhambra Source. It focuses on the mandarin-english language barrier and is a heavily-edited version of a longer 10 page paper I wrote about a year ago. It is titled Communication Breakdown - I may redo it.

A piece I came up with and did last year in my concept art class. It is a Katamari Damacy scene.

CENTERSTAGE - Young Playwrights Festival 2012

These are preliminary sketches (Call For Entries Poster) for the 26th Annual YPF

This is a drawing of an armored Chinese boat from the... Sung Dynasty? Anyhow, this is rolled in with my thesis - I am working on a series that features the presentation of interior spaces in close relationship to exterior spaces - I will show you soon exactly what I mean.

Hog Sweat

This summer has been the sweatiest summer of my entire life, I am 100% on this claim.

In addition to working in a hot little kitchen, I have been tending a garden plot started by Tara Megos, and I slaved away with Craig Bowers for a good few weeks to pull together our first show (which ended up being a big group, 65+) titled: VEND SEND MEND at Sub-Basement Artist Studios in Baltimore.

We had great entries made from all over the world and it was a thrill to see each new entry make its way over in the mailman's mail hands. It just so happened that on the same night of our opening, July 1st, there was an R. Kelly concert at the 1st Mariner and traffic was total shit. Some have told me that they were stuck in traffic heading over to the show and decided to just give up and get some ice cream instead. For all those who stood in traffic because they were trying to make it to the Vend Send Mend opening: I love you.

Thank you Jefferey Kent and Jennifer Tam at Sub-Basement! You guys are the best.

Taiwan Travel Posters

I recently completed a short series (3) of travel posters for Taiwan since I had such a great time when I was there in December/January- There were some great moments in geography. Whatever that means.

Summer! And Congratulations to those graduating from MICA this year~

This past semester was busiest I've ever been in my life. Between working 3 jobs, taking 18 credits and helping a friend brush epoxy onto his canoe I also managed... well, I managed.

In my last post I mentioned being one of the winners for the 2011 Words on Wheels joint project with Baltimore schools. There was a reception where we met with the young poets and were given the chance to get to know them a little better. Another recent big deal was the outcome of my portfolio for MICA's Undergraduate Competitive Scholarships. I was fortunate enough to have been awarded two scholarships: (1) the Nancy Lee Rhodes Roberts '39 Scholarship and (2) the Seymour Mandelbaum Merit Scholarship.

Its hard for me express how helpful these scholarships are. I was actually really close to not returning to school next year because I lacked the financial backing. However! Thanks to these scholarships, I can be in school this next year. So, from the bottom of my black, rotting heart, thank you, donors!

In terms of artwork, I am working on a comic that I started for my Sequential Arts class: PAPER MOUNTAIN. When completed it will be 20 pages. Here is the first page of the story and also a progress shot of me trying to get my act together during finals week:

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE - Mural and Lantern!

Hello, its been a long time since I last posted and many things have happened.

Here is, for example, a short list of things that have happened to me recently:

1. The Rivals of the West 2011 Spring Season is no longer consuming my life

2. I was one of the winners for the Words on Wheels project

3. Recently received a large scholarship from the Undergraduate Competitive Scholarship competition at MICA and I need to thank some people for making that happen~

There have also been some truly terrifying events: I heard a terrible decapitation story.

Below are a few photographs of the installation my sister, Frog, and I put together with the help of Kimberly Hiles and Dan Talbot. We designed and built the lantern and created the mural in the MICA Gateway building for the Rivals of the West 2011 Spring Season. This Installation was for A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.

" Upbeat" poem by Rasethamir El

At MICA there is this project with the MTA and a few other folks where we take poems written by local school children and create illustrations based off those poems. This project is called "Words on Wheels." The chosen poem/illustrations are then integrated into the MTA system by being displayed in busses so that passengers can gawk at them.

My poem is titled "Upbeat" and it was written by Rasethamir El (3rd Grade) who is a student at Windsor Hills Elementary and Middle School.

Here is the poem:

The Play's The Thing and more

This past month has been hectic. Being Head Publicist for The Play's The Thing has turned out to be so much more than I thought it would be. I mean that both negatively and positively.

Anyhow, I am posting 3 things tonight. One page from my sequential arts class and one finished poster for the play Dutchman and one nearly finished poster for A Streetcar Named Desire.

I will eventually post more information on the plays but not until the second poster is done.

This semester I am participating in Christopher Shipley's "The Play's The Thing" class and am head of publicity.

We are producing two classic American plays:

1. A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

2. Dutchman by Amiri Baraka

Chinese Things

I came up with a story about an alien named Chang-Chang. He is from outer space and speaks mandarin. I don't have anything else on him, just those three details.

This is a dragon I drew for my concept art class. I'm planning on scanning this worm and making it a skin design for a vehicle; I came up with this idea after seeing Nick Illuzada collaborate with Mitchell's handsome tiger tattoo. This is a C.D. cover I came up with for Blonde Redhead's album La Mia Vita Violenta (My Violent Life). The colors are off so I will repost, but I think you get the gist of it.

The painting was done in gouache and the halo around his head is shiny gold paint, so its too bad it won't show on your screen unless you have a super-screen that shows metallic effects.

These are a few dwelling designs I came up with for my concept art class.

I have been looking at books that document vernacular building designs and its blowing my mind. If you have time, take a look at: Built By Hand, a book that is filled with interesting pictures and notes.

I came up with this image of a burning car* for a video game cover design. It is for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I remember playing this game and driving the cars around and shooting guns though I can't remember anything about the story.

In a lot of ways I like the way cars look like when they are on fire. It always seems like its an arresting image in that when you watch a car on fire you inevitably seem to await its explosion.

Something like that.

Christian the librarian gave me a printout of a car on fire which was inspiring in an unexpected way.

*one of the cars you can steal in the game is this, a blue "deluxo".

From sketch to near finish:

Recently I've been really digging into Yuko Shimizu's work and so I felt inspired to try working a different way. Something about getting to do the drawing by hand and color by computer seems like a comfortable spot for me. I'm trying it out.

In addition to Yuko I've been looking through American illustration annuals, finding images I like and copying them into my sketchbook. It works well as a method of documenting what I like and I often find that redrawing images I like helps me explore different ways of handling medium (since I have to imitate the original artist's hand).

I have a few flies in my sketchbooks too which I keep from decaying by covering them with tape. This is a good way to track the number of flies that you have murdered with the pages of your artwork.

Hobgoblin

For my concept art class we had to read "the snow queen" (the first story about the looking glass) and then come up with character designs for the hobgoblin mentioned in the story.

The image below is my version of the hobgoblin. He is about 3 feet tall and makes a lot of noise in the form of grunts and scoffs. He has four arms, two of which he uses to make inventions and the other two he usually uses to scratch his head or gesticulate in frustration.

I haven't posted anything in a while and I feel a little funny about it.

So I will post more often then, I suppose.

Somebody very close to me is planning on starting up her own astrology/numerology business.

She asked me to come up with a cover for her brochure and I regurgitated this:

Quasi-Chinese, Pseudo-American

What happens to me when I'm in Los Angeles is I end up eating a lot of asian food, working odd jobs with my father, and trying to hang out with as many people as possible but failing to do so.

For the past few weeks I have been feverishly working with my father to clean out the house we have lived in for the past 14 or so years while working on electrician-esque projects at the local Hilton where my father also plays piano two nights a week. I have been speaking a lot of bad mandarin and eating all the Hilton mints which I can get my hands on.

I have noticed the abrupt shortage of illustrative posts amongst my peers and it pains me.

Well, okay, it doesn't pain me, I just start to feel bad for some reason.

So here is my contribution:

The Dagger by Nikos Kavvadas

Nikos wrote a poem about a dagger with some bad juju living in it. In collage class we had to do an illustration for it, and so this is what I came up with.

I looked at the Stinky Cheeseman a lot while making this piece.

China Story #2:

When we were in Lijiang, China in the Yunnan province there was an old man carrying groceries walking down the road. He was about to cross the small wooden bridge when two stray dogs met up on the bridge and started starting shit with each other. The old man looked at them and then furrowed his eyebrows and grew a large frown. He started yelling stuff like "Scram!" in Chinese. The dogs paid no heed. So the old man, with his armful of vegetables kicked the closer dog square in the gut and sent it flying into the neighboring vegetable garden. "Stupid dog! I told you to move didn't I !?" So I've been in China and Taiwan for the past couple of weeks.

I went with my sister, Elaine and my mother. You may or may not know them.

Anyhow, I'll post up a few pages from a sketchbook I started while I was abroad and also 3 spreads from my zine Ursus Majorsys.

I will tell you about the many tales I have brought back with me from Asia, but not now.

Here is a primer:

There are many, many, many stray dogs in China. I bet that you could build a whole entire second Great Wall of China using only stray dogs and mortar in which case it would probably be named the Great Dogwall of China or "Chang Go Cheng" in Mandarin. In fact, there are so many dogs (specifically in the Yunnan province) that they make tote bags out of them.

Philadelphia and Providence and Being Alone At a Hotel

Over Thanksgiving break I participated in many occasions, both social and solo.

One such occasion was this: On my way back from Providence I was in the airport when a U.S. Airways employee at the desk of gate F8 announced over the intercom:

"Flight 5002 has been overbooked. We are now looking for volunteers to trade their seats on this flight for a guaranteed seat on a later flight. Additionally, volunteers will receive flight vouchers good towards any future flight at the amount of $2oo. Please see the desk for more information."

So I thought to myself, "I guess I'll do it. I've got time to spare."

So I did it. I sat and waited for the next flight and held my voucher happily. When the next flight arrived, the lady at the desk announced the exact same situation. What did I do? What any sensible asian would! I took the deal again and obtained another voucher! $400 dollars in vouchers!

"Oh. Wait... It looks like there won't be any flights until tomorrow morning..."

"... Okay, so I should just wait-"

"Let me ring up a hotel voucher for you, Mr.Wang."

"Oh."

An hour later I was sitting pantsless in an extra-large king size bed in a two and a half star Philadelphia hotel watching Cinderella Man.

I ended up watching that movie 3 times and Gladiator 2 times.

Some stuff from sketchbook class.

The first spread illustrates my fear of monarch butterfly caterpillars. The big thing with the giant eye-head is a monarch caterpillar (there is an "m" on his head to signify this) and it is setting fire underneath the cage in which he is keeping me captive. I will be roasted to a golden brown before he consumes me.

The blobs of red drip-stuff are tears of anguish. I don't know. They actually aren't tears of anguish, I just made that up. Maybe they are drips of lava or something.

In the effort to think, the human being assumes a position(s). This phenomenon has been observed by many. A popular example is Auguste Rodin's statue: The Thinker. In his timeless sculpture not a moment but an entire act is captured. Similarly, as I sat on the cold, damp floor of my apartment building, I was determined to create a sculpture that conveyed not a singular moment in time, rather the act of thinking.

First, in the act of thinking/meditating, we find a comfortable position. The position is always constant, some find it sitting cross-legged, some find it by lying down flat, others find it walking-- all these are constant and provide the body and mind a source of energy that is a continuous flow. This constant state allows the body to attach itself to the physical realm whilst allowing the mind to detach (because the constant motion of the body frees the mind from that specific responsibility).

From this this act the mind takes flight and makes leaps and hoo-hahs and all that jazz hot dogs.

These three sculptures were for my Sculptural Forms class with Genna Watson. I hope you find some humor in them.

This collection of books was based on an assignment which required a sculpture that seemed to have a purpose but actually was a useless item. These books, although hard to see here, are permanently glued to the wooden structure containing it- rendering the collection of books as a useless whole... Hah! Stupid books!

We had to create a hanging piece... I wanted the negative space around the dunce hat and stool to transform and become as much a part of the sculpture as the actual tangible objects themselves. Also, I think I make a great dunce.

This is Cletus in Art History class reading about ancient vases and all that other bullshit.

Did you know that if you eat a polar bear's liver you die from an overdose of vitamin A? Its true!
